Le Tour Diary | Stage 20, It’s Only 00’57″

stage20-3
We've all watched Cadel Evans' career progress over the past 20 years. It's been nearly a decade that Cadel started racing grand tours and it seems like such a long haul for him to finally make it this far. A few riders have peaked at a young age and had everything go their way to win a Grand Tour, but Cadel's journey as put into perspective how difficult it truly is to win the Tour de France.

Andy and Frank are exceptional bike riders and there’s no doubt that one of them will win the Tour de France one day. However, after seeing the dedication, focus, setbacks and time it has taken Cadel to wear the yellow jersey on the Champs-Élysées, nobody was as prepared as him.

I’m having a hard time confirming if this is true or not, but a journalist was telling me that Cadel went out and rode the TT course this morning. Andy and Frank drove in the car for part of it, and the other part they rode in their track suits. Cadel also rode the Dauphiné in preparation for the TdF probably knowing this final TT could be the most important of his life. Simply put, Cadel has seen this race slip through his fingers so many times, nothing was going to stop him from winning.

Many people have been asking me if Frank or Andy will attack on the final stage. The short answer is no. Not even if there was a margin of only a few seconds. The Champs-Élysées is more cerimonial than anything. It would be futile for anyone to attack unless there were time bonuses at the intermediate springs (which there are not). The race for the points classification could be won or lost on the Champs-Élysées, and that’s often what the final stage is about. I think Cav has it all sewn up.

Congratulations Cadel. I reckon you’ve earned this a hundred times over and no one can ever take this away from you. All the major contenders were there to win and you came out on top. I can’t believe we thought 57 seconds was gonna be close.

Now, will Julia Gillard declare a national holiday on Monday?

P.S. if you want a shot at winning Cadel’s BMC, you can buy a raffel ticket here.

P.P.S. Bracks_ashat, how about those 10 sets of Boras you promised?

Bracks_ashat: I’m going to start a bet going on. I will buy willing to buy the top 10 users who get their name in first, Campy Bora ultra wheels, if and only if Cadel Evans ever wins the tour. I say again, if Cadel EVER wins Le Tour, I will be buying 10 users Campy Bora ultra wheels.

sA steely jaw beats a swivel neck every time. When I saw the body language of the two contendors in the starting gate, I knew we were in for something special. Whilst the mainstream media will now proclaim Cadel as a hero (wait for the phrase ‘Our Cadel’!), it is the grass roots cyclists and supporters, the bloggers like Wade, and all those who have believed and not tried to knock down a very determined guy over the years who will be truly rewarded and ecstatic for Cadel. To misquote an ex-PM: “This is a victory for the true believers”. Chapeau Cadel!

Imposible to put into words how fantastic this is! Truly an incredible fight and the most worthy of outcomes. Cadel has a heart as big as Phar Lap and incredible tenacity. Awesome! And my first post here, but Wade, Cyclingtips is a top read and your tour coverage has been brilliant. Might be a bit late for the popular press to be as supportive as the believers, but can’t wait!

Great blog. Great day for Aussie cycling. And climbing times/power estimations suggest a great day for those that hope for a clean sport.
P.S A Schleck may win a TdF sooner than we think-in a few weeks Contador might be stripped.

Let’s not deny this guy has had a fair few knockers amongst the Australian public (albeit unfairly). Here’s hoping these are the people that he’s most managed to convince of his champion status. The magnitude of this achievement can’t be understated. May this day change the sport of cycling in Australia forever.

TT winner Tony Martin mentioned post-race that the long downhills favoured a heavy, strong rider such as himself, and required one to keep pedalling for the most part. I’m guessing they weren’t that inclined, acting sort of like a reverse false-flat. And Andy S was coasting because…(take your pick….)
    (a) his legs were tired from the TT’ing at that point
    (b) he’d heard the time gaps and had given up on beating Cadel
    (c) he just doesn’t have the idea of TT in his bones

I’m going for mostly A, a large part of C, and a bit of B to top it off.

Can’t add anything that hasn’t already been said.
Cadel rode like a true champion.  (How many years do you have to go back before you can see a TdF that didn’t have a whiff of drug cheat on the podium??)
First Aussie cyclist to win the world’s greatest bike race.
But surely not the last.  Will this open the floodgates?
Cadel again next year.  Then Porte, then Cam Meyer.  One or both of them riding for an Australian team?
The times have certainly changed since Phil Anderson’s historic yellow jersey back in the long-ag0-now!
    Go Cadel.
And thanks to Wade and the photographers, especially Veeral.

  • FinDebacle

So proud of Cadel! Full respect to Andy: his solo breakaway was magnificent – I didn’t think he had it in him – and Frank rode a solid race; but it just serves to make Cadel’s victory all the sweeter.
Chapeau to all the riders, the soigneurs, the mechanics, everyone who contributed to such an awesome tour (I’m a bit tired and emotional!)
And chapeau to you and Veeral for bringing us such wonderful coverage. The photo of Tony Martin looking absolutely shattered with drool coming off his chin (can’t remember which stage – somewhere in the Pyrenees) will, for me, remain one of the enduring images of cycling.

Love your work Bracksy. Might put them on Cadel’s BMC when my raffle ticket comes up…

Great coverage Wade, you too have put in a Herculean effort over the Tour. How you managed to get a great post & pics in every day while fitting in a ride, or even see the place, I’ll never know.

I’ll get in early on the bandwagon and say I’m glad I kept the faith, to ‘ride it with Cadel’ like so many others here was fantastic. I’ll be sleeping for a week. I’ve met the guy, and seen first hand his genuine efforts to help kids with Cerebral Palsy (he met that girl and her Dad at a BBQ and just spontaneously sent signed World Champ jersey and shoes a few days later).

Cadel probably hasn’t physically changed much from the previous few years, mentally he was so much stronger I reckon. He made his luck, he forced the results (winning a stage, staying up the front out of trouble, dragging the rest of the GC up Galibier and Alpe D’Huez, etc.) and then exerted his mental edge last night when it mattered. His win was comprehensive in my eyes, the time gap could be ten minutes I reckon.

I feel bad for Andy, but he was beaten by a champion.

I really don’t know what to say. Cadel has managed to swing me from not being a fan, actually someone who knocked him for all his madness off the bike, to some one who now has great respect for him on the bike, and am willing to forget his off bike out bursts.

I hope Wade doesn’t mind this spam, but this is what I had to say about Cadel last night, before the ITT.

For mine, Cadel showed guts this tour, and that beats panache any day!

Simply one of Australia’s greatest sporting achievements! I feel even prouder to be an Aussie. Cadel’s the most deserving winner. Timing’s everything and despite him staying rightly so with BMC,what perfect timing for the launch of GreenEdge. Future of Australian cycling gets better and better.

Anyone know if JJ Rojas can win the green jersey tomorrow?

Cavendish missed the time cut off in the past two stages before the ITT, but was reinstated because he was in a 60 man Gruppetto. He was docked 20 points in both stages, but so was Rojas in the second, and is 15 points in the lead.

Cavendish is also still copping it from other riders (Hondo?) about ‘allegedly’ hanging onto car doors to get over the climbs…

    Could be a meaningful sprint.

So true Paul, Andy almost looked afraid as he waited to go into the starting gate and his face was screwed up with nerves on the ramp. As for the mainstream media? Can you imagine how Kochie is going to handle this, it is going to get ridiculous.

one can only smile when i see or hear the media coverage he is receiving here in Australia.

Cycle racing may not be the most followed sport here and not all people will truly understand what he, his support base and Australian cycling has achieved but hopefully the media will take them there in a manner not dissimilar to the americas cup victory. It was a shame last year that he did not win the Giro for Aldo Sassi, whilst he was still alive. But I am sure this one victory will be shared with him in mind.
Cadel I hope this victory takes you onto others. This tour you have shown more maturity and race smarts than I have ever seen in the past and it shows. Although others have influenced the way this story has played out. You have won it in your way and ultimately on your terms.

This Tour will be remembered by all lovers of it and talked about for ever as one of the great battles.

    Chapeau Chapeau

On another note I am buying a pair of official TDF thongs (flip flops) as a momento, now you can’t get a more australian souvenir than that.

PS. I like the guy, but jeez it was funny watching Tomo get so excited after Cadel’s win.

His interview with Matt White was a p1sser, Tomo was raving on and on and on while Whitey could barely stop himself from laughing.

Good on you Tomo, I love to see a commentator become a fanboy sometimes.

I totally agree.  When watching last night I thought that AS looks scared while waiting to start.  When you compared his body language to that of Cadel and Bertie you would have assumed that both of them were in the lead and not Andy.  I think he new before he had even started that he had lost the yellow.  What you could now know was that Cadel would ride such a great TT.

  • Dr Don

For me it’s the greatest tour so far. It had everything. I was just saying to a mate yesterday before the itt that the final result wasn’t important due to the great racing, attacks, and all the associated drake. For me, yesterday pre itt, I was satisfied and very proud of what Cadel and th rest of the BMC crew had done. My mate goes …”WTF, Cadel for the win dude”. and for a moment I didn’t want to think about it. We all remember the itt a few years ago with contador, what if Cadel didn’t have a good day, what if he had more bike changes than the chicken did, what if…..

Last nights itt had us all on the edge of our seats, with each time split it just got better and better.

The schleks have to be accept the result and I think that they couldn’t have done much more than they did, they threw everything into it. Great racing by the both of them.

Now all I have to do is stay awake for the stage tonight, see history being made, the step on the dais and enjoy.

Next year I will have to work out a way to put this site on the blacklist, it’s just too distracting. Good job CT, don’t know how you find the time. Vereel (and others) great shots, hope it turns into a profitable career and that your not chained to the desk pushing a pen.

Interesting note, when Cadel did his bike change in the previous stage his replacement bike had his number on it, first time I had seen this usually the replacement bike has no number. Perhaps a bit of insurance to ensure that he got the right bike?

  • http://twitter.com/dan__wilkins Dan Wilkins

Credit where credit is due… Cadel showed an absolute masterclass of cycling- he hasn’t taken over my love for Albertoo but by gee he’s gone close…
    I’m sorry for doubting….what a champ.

Like a lot of us I have been watching Cadel’s career since they first started talking about him in Australian Mountain bike magazine back in the 90′s. His result is awesome & deserves the recognition he receives for it, it been a massive effort over a lot of yrs.

Can I also say thank you to you Wade, & Vereel,  along with SBS, you have made it possible for us to feel as though we are there too. It’s a long way from my lounge room in a little town in QLD to the western borders of France, yet I feel like I am riding in the car with you guys to each stage. Well done !!

Australia II won the America’s Cup in 1983 (Newport, Rhode Island).  I watched the victory and heard BoB Hawk announce, not a public holiday, but as close to one as anyone could.  We now have a victory of equal (or possibly greater) magnitude in terms an event of world recognition.

Cadel is now more famous than any other cyclists in Australian history.

“Do you come from a land down under?

Where women glow and men plunder?

Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?

You better run, you better take cover.”

I think, if anything, Porte is just more laconic than Cadel. He certainly attracts less media attention at the moment so it is probably easier to be. Having said that, Cadel is no media darling and often comes across as quite awkward. But he is an absolute legend and deserved to win due to how level headed, CALM and COLLECTED he was under immense pressure on the past 3 stages. I doubt anyone would disagree with this assessment and is the exact opposite of what you are saying.

  • Judith Cahill

Hey Wade, the pics in this post are just the best ever, you have used an awesome spread of shots to highlight what is just a truly remarkable achievement……….Absolute Kudos to all of the people who take the shots….Love it, love it all……

Cadel – not nice, deadset legend. Most magnificent ride I – over the past 3 days especially -  showing GUTS, determination, poise, and brilliant bike handing skills under immense pressure and backed up against the wall several times. Cadel’s team did a fantastic job but they certainly weren’t the strongest team there and often it was left to Cadel to punch above his weight solo. No one is more deserving and I hope this silences the knockers. Good on you mate

Mathematically, he can do it; there is the usual quota of points available in the sprints.  However, even if Rojas beats Cav on both the intermediate and finishing sprint, that wouldn’t be enough; he’d need Cav to finish lower than second on at least one of those sprints.

Abdu never won successive sprints on the Champs Élysées, he won the final stage sprint in 93 & 95.

He won the green jersey in 91, 93 and 94.

His famous crash on the Champs Élysées was in 91, and he actually walked across the line, stepped into the ambulance and spent two days in hospital. He was not awarded the green jersey until the next year’s Tour.

Wikipedia is wrong by the way, he didn’t crash into a ‘promotional soft drink can’, watch the clip on You Tube and you’ll see the Gendarme lean out to look and bang!

The legend apparently lives in Italy somewhere, virtual hermit by all accounts. Hence my homage name.

Couldnt agree more about Cadel winning it. We cant forget Cadel put 2 minutes into Schleck on the Galibier and only got away from him on the ADH stage becuase of the wheel issue.
And its not his first TdF TT win, so it was no fluke.
So one could say he was better on the intermediate stages, the mountains and the TT.
Schleck never had any bad luck so no-one could possibly say that Cadel wasnt significantly.

Enjoy your Boras. I issed that post. I will just have to ennjoy my winnings – got Cadel at $24 for before the tour started, So I can now buy my own wheels! How he was ever offered at $24 highlights how he was, until now, not paid the respect he deserved by many.

Dead set legend. Nice to feel that it was won by a clean rider, without any sense of uncertaintyThanks Wade.   Veeral, if you dont get a gig out of these photos it will amaze me, they are truly fantastic.

Agree. Which makes me more impressed by Cadel having over a minute on Contador last year after Cadel rode the Giro, before he broke his elbow.

The best TDF in my living memory, it had it all. An Aussie won displaying heroic courage, planning, hard work, determination and tactics. When everyone had support from a team member or fellow country men Cadel did it alone. Cycling won, Cadel will be the first TDF winner in 20 years who does not have to answer serious questions about drugs. The time trial effort was amazing he smashed Spartacus, Alberto, crushed the brothers and almost won the stage.

This year’s Tour seemed to have transcended from a sporting event to a place typically occupied by literary masterworks. A complex set of intertwining plots unfolding over 21 chapters, with the underdog who has battled consistently coming out on top – the stuff that dreams, and legends, are made of. Congrats all!

I agree. However, as racing cyclists/ grass root cyclists, we now have an unprecedented opportunity to gently guide interested and curious people towards the beauty inherent in our sport. How and why it works; it’s rich history, legends and scandals; it’s value to health, longevity, and fitness; transport etc… You guys all know these things. Let’s not treat questions and erroneous statements from those around us (friends, family, collegues, media etc…) as a chance to ridicule. It’s a great day in our sport. Let’s not loose the moment. And Cadel, what a scintillating performance from you and all you’re associated with.

While I have been a long and dedicated reader of CT, I’ve never really got around to commenting. But Cuddle’s ride in this tour is definitely worth a first post. He has showed that he has been the form and consistent rider of this tour – some amazing climbs as well as general nous in the peleton to avoid the calamities of the first weeks. Great stuff. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time, but he probably cemented his place as a top guy in my mind in his post-2007-tdf interview with Andrew Denton.

Living in the Netherlands means watching the great classics and le tour with the locals really shows how big cycling can get. I really hope that it continues the phenomenal rise of the past few years (Cadel/Robbie/Renshaw etc) through the promise that the Meyer/Porte’s of the cycling world are showing. (Fingers crossed that this also translates into general public awareness of cyclists in Oz too – like here in Europe.)

Great work Cadel, BMC and all involved in the win. Congrats.

I first met Cadel after a Herald Sun Tour back in the 90′s. He hadn’t ridden, he was there flogging his old DBR mountainbike kit to help pay some bills etc. I bought some of it to help him along … Plus I was a poor student and needed some kit. I asked him to sign it and told him I’d keep it until he was famous. I still have it.
He’s had so many detractors over the years … Usually from people with no idea how much pressure something like a Grand Tour, and mostly from people more interested in his love of his dog than his riding ability or his truly generous nature.
As many have also noted, he has been a different rider since he won the Wirld Champs, and it has been great to see how he has handled the pressure and the demands. Amazing what a different team does too hey?
All this being said, to be able to witness the last three weeks on television and this site has been an absolute pleasure. It could only be beaten by actually being there.
Well done Cadel. You won’t find many saying that you werent the strongest or that you don’t deserve this. Enjoy it.

I agree and applaud Cadel’s position on drugs!  How do you understand his replies/ lack of replies to the questions about drugs at the press conference?  I felt these sadly drew a slightly darker cloud over his bearing and the great success of his tour, and career. I feel 110% confident in his position and the reality of his meticulous preparation, though I found the darkness in his reply hard to explain.  Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

A fabulous clean win by a huge talent.  Something to admire!

But I reckon I can speak for all of us when I say that having slugged it out on the couch night after night and suffering thru the day in sleep deprived zombieland –> makes us feel even more like part of the victory.

Only one downside: have been too stuffed to get on the bike!

And I think it’s worthy noting that the Schlecks (and in particular Andy) were  gracious in defeat and still proud of their achievements.

Who cares if Cadel is awkward, quirky, eccentric etc.  He is a cyclist, not an attention whore.  Im sure he didnt get into cycling for cameras to be shoved in his face, and wouldnt care less if he was left to ride without all the fuss.

As a relentless follower of Cadel, I have to disagree. I feel the majority of ongoing support he has got from Australia is from the mainstream media! They normally take a while to warm up, but when they do, they are 110% behind it!

Blokes like Kochie have spoken with a sense of pride and hope, and contrary to what you say it was Kochie raving about how fantastic it was to see Cadel dedicate his ride into Pau to his friend Amy Gillet back in 2005.

Its wankers like Hughsy who slagged off cyclists and Cadel for a few cheap laughs at the expense of cyclists safety on their radio program a few years ago that are all waving their Aussie flag trying to get on board for an interview with him now.

I’ll be the first to say, I doubted his move to BMC and I told him that, but over a coffee one day in December 2009, he put my mind at ease, saying BMC were willing to work with him and wanted to see him succeed. I knew he was at the right place.

    The rest is history.

I bet he’s ordered them all with the Shimano freehub!

  • LeighMJ

Seeing that the bike he hopped onto already had the 141 number on it I would say your right.

  • Ron

What a win for Cadel! What a great three weeks of racing.

Wish I was in Australia right now to be part of the celebration!

I always think Cadel looks fat on telly compared to ze Schlecks with his MORE MASS weaponised PIPES but then I see these photos and he makes this 63kg Timbo feel like some sort of obese Biggest Loser contestant, with Commando Yelling At Me “WHY ARE YOU SO OBESE”
    “I’VE BEEN BUSY”
    “DOING WHAT? EATING”

I am shamed into losing another 5kg.
