The Otway Odyssey – I’ve Been Odysized!

Over the weekend 1750 mountain bikers got together for the fifth edition of the Otway Odyssey. I don't often associate with the feral species of cyclist known as "mountain bikers", but with the amount of top level roadies competing I thought I'd give it a crack. After all, it's only 100 kilometers. Piece of cake. I should have this done and dusted in no more than three hours and be sipping my second latte by 10am.

The evening before the race it began pouring down with rain. I’ve heard horror stories about how the terrain in the area turns into heavy clay when it gets wet. As I was falling asleep while listening to the rain pound on the roof I thought to myself , “This is not going to be an enjoyable 100km run through the forest.”

Thankfully we woke up to a beautiful warm morning. I hadn’t done a mountain bike race for many years and I felt like it was my first. I took a little stroll to see what everyone else was wearing, camelback or bottles, sunscreen or no sunscreen, how much food, what tyre pressure, etc.

Everyone had advised me to get as close to the front of the start as possible to ensure a decent position up the first climb. I’m well experienced with all of the tricks of maneuvering into the very front of the startline after riding all those Bay Crits and fortunately had no problem weaseling my way to the front of this mob. That was as close to the pointy end of the race as I got.

The race got off to a much more civil start that I had anticipated. The buzz of a couple thousand knobby tyres along the bitumen sounded like an attack of killer bees. I positioned myself at the front of the pack with most of the experienced riders, and even  still I can see why mountain bike handlebars are such an unwelcome hazard in the bunchrides.

A couple kilometers as we started ascending the first climb. It became evident very quickly that I wasn’t going to be in contention for a good result. The pace was seriously fast and there was no hope that I could hold onto the front group. The bunches started splitting and I found myself dropping back to the second group. As the second group split, I found myself struggling to hang on and thought to myself, “Wait a minute, we’re only 3km into this, I’m redlining already, and we have 97km to go. Who do I think I am?” Ahh, a sigh of relief. Here comes the third bunch…

The third bunch contained a few guys I knew from the road scene. Andrew Stalder (who attended the 1997 Junior World Championships and arguably still the best crit cyclist in Melbourne) and Danny Kah (who has represented Australia in the Olympics three times). In all honesty, I was surprised I could even hang with those two. They were probably just humoring me anyway.

And this is when the race became fun. My goals had changed from wanting a good result into simply wanting to beat Stalder and Kah. CCCC punks”, I thought. “These guys might go alright on the road, but I’m gonna smash them when we hit the singletrack!”

After the arduous slog up and down the fireroads we ventured deeper into the rainforest and it became increasingly muddy. Many of the climbs were unridable and it was a comedy of errors just trying to walk those bloody hills. At one point we were running in thick clay to our knees down a sketchy descent and everyone’s wheels became completely clogged. This was the one and only time I thought a Cannondale Lefty fork would have been a good option.

Shortly after we passed through the messy section of rainforest it was singletrack heaven. This was the opportunity to drop my rivals Stalder and Kah with my superior technical abilities. I was on fire. There’s nothing like the feeling of being on your A-game and linking up every twist and turn with perfection. During a transition roads a gun rider from TORQ took the lead into the next section of singletrack. My legs were feeling strong but my feeble upper body was taking a pounding. He was pushing me to my limit, but I was able to keep up with him by following his perfect lines. We must have put 20 minutes into my rivals in that sections alone.

Then the inevitable. I have no recollection of how it happened, but I found myself flying through the air at about 30km/hr. I hit the ground and while rolling down a steep drop-off I thought to myself, “This is it. I’m gonna have to get choppered outta here”. With every summersault and bounce I anticipated wrapping myself around tree or a rock. Instead, with a stroke of luck I somehow landed on a pile of ferns and foliage that was like a massive bean bag chair. I laid there for five minutes munching on an energy bar in the most comfortable state I could imagine at that point. Life is good.

Then it occurred to me that this area had a striking resemblance to episodes of Crocodile Hunter. Prime habitat for massive snakes and spiders. I could handle making front page news because of some epic mountain bike crash, but the thought of having a close encounter with a deadly reptile scares the crap out of me.

I then found myself riding alone. It seemed like I was alone for 20km of singletrack without a sign of any other rider. My thoughts were getting fuzzy but every so often I’d come around a corner to a photographer hiding in the bushes nearly giving me a heart attack

I needed to hold it together. My camelback was out of water and it became too much of an effort to reach for a bidon. Then, right before the second feedzone transition the unspeakable happened. Stalder, Kah and my other nemesis, Reece Stevens (who had broken his chain 50km’s ago), came ripping past me like I was standing still. This nearly cracked me. How the hell did these roadies ever catch me? Could it have been while I was laying in the ferns eating my energy bar?

I was determined to stay with my rivals but lost them in the feedzone. The smell of sausages and hamburgers made me stop and reconsider going out for the final 13km. My rough math estimated 1hr remaining at my current pace.

I set out from the feedzone determined to catch my competition. Soon after I passed a sign saying “Britney’s Meltdown”. That doesn’t sound too bad. If I could get through sections such as “Nucking Futz”, “Corporate Ladder”, “The gift that keeps giving” or “In Quads we Trust”, I should be able to smash Britney’s Meltdown and gain back some time on the guys ahead.

I can’t say precisely when the meltdown occurred, but I’d say it was sometime in between when I couldn’t see anyone behind me to the time when I got passed by a dozen riders. From then on it was an absolute grease-fest in the singletrack. The course was rutted-out and streams of water flowed down the tracks. Everyone I could see was fumbling around through the trails and could barely hold a line.

I never thought I’d say it, but I was relieved when I came up against “The Sledgehammer”. People had been telling me about The Sledgehammer as being this gruelling ascent near the finish that breaks a man’s spirit after all he’s been through. To me, this meant the end of the race was near. I couldn’t be happier. The fact that it was unridable made me even more pleased.

It was one of the least dramatic finishes I’ve ever been involved in, but one of the most satisfying. I crossed the line in just under 6 hours with not an ounce of energy to spare. Congratulations to everyone in my own little race. You all beat me….to a pulp.

To most of the competitors this is not considered a race per se. It is an event. It’s all about either finishing the course, beating your time from last year or beating your mates. That’s the beauty of something like this. It’s not like a road race where the pace is dictated to you and the outcome is largely decided by tactics, timing and aerobic engine. Finishing a road race is not the name of the game. To finish the Otway Odyssey however is a true achievement.

I’m forever hooked and will be making the journey every year. Thank you to Rapid Ascent who organised this spectacular event. The level of organisation was remarkable. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Congratulations to Chris Jongewaard who smashed the course in an unbelievable time of 4:22.06. These guys who finished in 4.5 hours are on a different planet. But equally impressive are all the guys who finished in ten or eleven hours. It shows some serious determination to slug it out for that long and finish. Tthere were over 300 riders who either DNS’s or DNF’d in the 100km event. The way I see it, the guys further down in the results endured many more hours of suffering than I ever could. Good on them!

Notes

The women’s race was not without controversy. From the race report:

It was a case of jubilation and then tears in the women?s elite field when U23 national champion Gracie Elvin crossed the line first only to discover she had been handed a 30 minute time penalty by race officials for a rule-breaking indiscretion.

Elvin overcame crippling cramp at the 80 kilometer mark to hold off Peta Mullens by nearly five minutes, but to no avail with her time penalty relegating her result from a win. “possibly the biggest of my life” said Elvin at the finish prior to learning of her penalty to a sixth placing.

The ruling bumped Peta Mullens up a place on the dias to take the official race title and $4000 prize money with Jo Wall elevated to second place, coming in less than a minute behind Mullens? 5:51:53 time. Rebecca Locke took official third placing in 6:08:19.

Elvin, who like Jongewaard has her sights set on the National Championships and the London Olympics in 2012, was visibly upset at the decision, taken after she took a hydration pack from crew while on the course, an act that she was unaware of being against race rules.

Race directors were sympathetic to Elvin’s case but determined that as a professional she should have known the rules.

Eventual women’s winner Peta Mullens

Phil Anderson is still in unbelievable form. My mate Brad Davies had been pulling turns with teammate Lachlan Norris(4th place) trying to get him back into the race after fixing his broken chain. Brad dug deep into the red and was hurting after Locky rode off. Soon after, Brad took a big tumble about the 40km mark and was considering pulling out at the transition area. Uncle Phil rolled up alongside and said in his burley voice “Its a real hard-mans day out today, eh!?” Brad eagerly agreed and got back on with the job inspired by a true hard man of cycling.

I have to say thank you to Trek for lending me this Superfly 29′er. I took it out for a testride during registration on Friday and they generously lent it to me for the race. It rode superbly and I’m blown away by two things that are new to me. First, the 29 inch wheels. The way they’re able to negotiate the sigletrack and roll over obstacles is awesome. Second, the SRAM 2×10 XO groupset. I loved the gear selection it had and found myself shifting on the front derailleur almost as much as the back.

In-Depth Analysis

I love the level of analysis that some people put into these types of events. It’s what makes it so much fun. Here’s an interesting way to look at the race. This is a chart put together by one of my mates Tim Calkins (who finished with a fantastic result). On the vertical axis is distance remaining and the horizontal axis is minutes behind a certain rider. We all start in the top left corner with 100 km remaining and having lost 0 minutes to any rider. As the race progressed, here are our respective gaps to the base rider blow out. All of a sudden we find that we have lost 40 min to Jongewaard in 20km.

Feel free to download the spreadsheet and manipulate it to suit your group of mates (you have to have some basic Excel skills, but you’ll figure it out). You can change who the base rider is on the “selector” sheet. You can also change who else is shown on the picture.

A few observations on our group by Tim:

1. Reece snapped his chain at about the 25km mark. He went from being 40sec behind Dr. Mitch Anderson to being 24 min behind during this stage.
2. Everyone (except Adrian Jackson) managed to lose at least 5 min to Dr. Mitch on the final loop.
3. Wade had a MELTDOWN for the last 30km. in the final loop, he lost 15min to Dr. Mitch and nearly 20min to Jonga. It was a 13km loop, so that’s over 1 min per km.
4. Byron Davies (maaaaawwww calkins) lost time to everyone at every stage.
5. Reece beat Peta Mullens — fastest chick — but only by putting in a hard effort on the final loop. Of course, she was off her bike for much of that loop due to serious chain issues, but that’s not relevant. She did manage to beat both Wade and Byron.

Its a great ride and event well organized.
I have attempted it once, on the cross bike and pulled out halfway after suffering the worst leg cramps I have ever experienced in my life. I will be back at some point to complete it.
I can only think of the suffering this years competitors went through with the amount of rain we have had.
I can only say that this bike ride/race is almost the longest walk I have taken with a bike.

  • Timmy

Climbing the fire trails at the start and decending through the creek crossings are a perfect test of intestinal fortitude.
They put on some top events these Rapid Ascent peeps.

  • jules

sounds like an awesome event. i’m going to attempt this next year after i chickened out when riding partners pulled out the last two years. i will do it on my own if i have to and might bring one of those EPIRB things to ensure i don’t end up on my back at the bottom of a gully :)

  • Adrian Miles

when I took up mtb was shocked how bloody hard it was. Climbs are stupid steep so always in the red, no choice, and the technical skills required made my 5 years of road and track as a young man feel like I’d been riding with training wheels. Let alone the pounding… So I’m interested in your experience Wade (my mental model is an hour on trails = about 2 hours on the road), how hard did it feel compared to, say, Tour of Bright? Or they just too different to compare?

As always Wade a great summary. I can really relate to the fuzzy mind towards the end. Seriouly struggled with some very basic maths trying to wok out my time (no computer).
Great event though – how spectacular was the start?!

  • LongDayOut

It was a long day out on the bike, this was my 4th Otway Odyssey and after the last wet one I knew what was to come so I just took it easy and enjoyed myself as much as possible rather than attempt a decent time. You know it’s going to be a long day when you can’t even push your bike up a hill as the clay/mud just packs up in your frame and the wheels won’t even roll lol

  • Anonymous

Great wrap up Wade of one of the toughest and best 1 day events going around.
On paper the Otway should never be as hard as it is, but every year the Otway conditions throw a curve ball at participants.
I liken the race to a 100km time trial. So you need to be on your game in every department: fitness, equipment selection and skills
Great result for your first effort, all the lads you pitted yourself against are all seasoned Otway campaigners.

  • slowdave

Tough race thats for sure, well done to all finishers, My meldown happened on the final bog fest with about 5km to go. Lefty would have been great. Not choosing singlespeed would have been even better.

I don’t ride MTB because everytime I do (3 times) I hurt something bad. Going fast is just the best, just not with tress. I’ll stick to the road.

Wade, your crash happened just behind a team mate of mine. He was perplexed…said one second you were following him down the trail, the next you were laying on your back 30 metres down the cliff to his left.

Dr. Mitch certainly was strong. He caught me at the start of the final 13km loop and I thought he was gone for good. I had to dig very deep to get him back. Thank goodness for that last decent where I could put some time into him so I didn’t have to sprint to the line with him!

See you next year. Fingers crossed for identical conditions. Two wheel drift everywhere is awesome! Riding (sliding) down that 20% decent a foot deep in clay was TOO MUCH FUN!

  • http://www.cyclingTipsBlog.com cyclingTips

I’d agree with the comparison of 1hr on trails = 2hrs on the road (in terms of distance covered). I’d say this 100km was equivalent to 200km on the road (not sitting in a bunch!)

It’s hard to compare road an mountain bike events. I’ve been more shattered after doing the Melbourne to Warrnambool, but the dynamics and types of efforts are completely different.

  • Jesse Carlsson

Great report Wade – I hope calf-size wasn’t too much of an issue out there…

If tennis was our chosen sport it would be tough to arrange a hit with Nadal or Federer. That’s the great thing about this sort of adventure – the entry fee gives you the right to ride the same course at the same time as past and present champions of MTB, road cycling, triathlon, etc. I can’t think of too many sports where this is possible.

On paper, the finish times of the elite are incredible, but to ride the same course, finish completely spent and realise that somehow the best are still a couple of HOURS faster, gives you a true understanding for how mind-blowingly strong the top riders really are.

  • Tim

Parts of the course were a farce.

Course construction by absolute sadistic barbarians.

I had a ball, despite wrecking my pristine shiny white Sidis 25km in in that shocking (farcical) set of puddles when we headed off road.

Great ride, btw, CT. Thanks for the high 5, I can’t believe I was an hour behind (farce).

I’m already sussing out a Scott Scale HT for next year. And some actual MTB action before hand. No MTBing for 6 months beforehand was a farce, but you did alright, so maybe it was just my farcical lack of singletrack skills.

Maybe they should make it 100km up a hill. That would be choice.

    Awesome photos and great report.

Great Great Great Story!!! Love it! I have never done a MTB race myself, but I am doing the Kona MTB Marathon here in SA in August. It’s a bit more fireroady type thing than single track, but I’m doing it with a fit as anything 69yo guy! I will put this race on my calander for next year for sure. Lock me in!
So much more insipered now, thanks CT. Sometimes you need to read a story like this when the 700k+ a week can get to be a bit of a drag. You have delivered!!

Great report Wade. As bad as the conditions were in some parts it made for an epic day out on the MTB. The walking up the unrideable sections just made the flowing single-track all the sweeter.

Last year I said that “I’d never be back” because I went too deep too early and didn’t enjoy it at all but after this year I will definitely be back again and again.

The organisation of the whole event is done amazingly well. Something I would have said rarely when racing the road.

Hopefully I’ll get some pre-Otway Mountain biking in next year to improve the skills a bit and be up for the Cycling Tips challenge. See you at crits (I’m a bit better suited to 1 hour +3 laps these days!).

  • pinarello413

Sweet, I’ve heard good things about the Malvern Stars. I reckon i might need a bike fit for my Focus carbon hardtail, although i reckon i got it pretty close, but it’s always better to have someone look at it.
    Tho, should i get a dual suspension?? dunno… :)

  • Gus

Nice report Wade. Similar experiences to my own through each section, but I was a bit behind you. Tell me this though …. where did you get the photo’s as they appear to be from Rapid Ascent, but the Rapid Ascent site doesn’t appear to have them yet? Any tips?

Wow this race has got me back in the spirit. Travelled from the Sunshine State to the mud fest. I had a fantastic weekend. I love racing in Victoria. Lots of strong competition. I can’t deny I am mighty sore right now and have a stark appreciation I have some work to do on my form.

  • Tim

Come on, John! 100km uphill is easy! That was some sort of Western Front epic muddly hellish armageddon. The only thing missing was mustard gas and Jerry firing indiscriminately amongst the ranks.

Big Respekt to Phil Anderson. A lot of sportsmen/women never get on the bike, touch the footy, etc. again. Maybe through a mix of not wanting to look ‘bad’ because they can’t hit their PB’s, play like they used to, get hassled by muppets trying to ride off their wheel, etc.

I would be awed to ride with the great man and play the six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing – “I rode with the guy who wore the yellow jersey, who really gave it to Bernard Hinault on an Alps stage in the Tour, etc.” Even though I think it might be his backyard, it was a damn tough race to take on even just for a little ride.

  • SupermanSam

With all due respect pinarello413 (and to Phil), no one is the version of Cipo. Cipo is still cut like a Musashi sandwich.

When someone turns up to the start line of the Tour dressed in a toga (and having made his whole team also do so), or when they are arrested for motorpacing on the Autostrada in Italy, or when they do an ITT leg on the Tour dressed in either a full arm & leg human muscle/tiger/Tron printed kit, or even when they text photos to all the main GC riders on La Vuelta of themselves in speedos on the beach having just retired from the race in the mountains, then I might agree they resemble Cipo, slightly…

At risk of exposing my man crush/unrequited bromance, the true greatness of Cipo will never be replicated.

  • Mr Bailey

Dude the race is always advertised as being hard. So best you expect the trail to be so.

The Otways is always the wettest part of Victoria and its been the wettest few months in years. This year’s race was always going to be a mud-fest.

Congrats Wade on finishing. Its a monster!

  • Ben

When you are mountain biking, you can’t blame anyone but yourself for overestimating your supreme dirt-riding skills. On the road, one minute you are cruising along, next you get squashed by a inattentive driver.

  • Sean Doyle

I’ve done quite a few enduro events over the years and can relate to every thing you talked about Wade. For 99% of the riders it’s a race with themselves. What will go first the body, the will to continue or doesn’t it all hang in to the finish. They are an awesome journey to experience and can leave you a broken shell or fill you full of confidence and self awareness. I haven’t done this race but one day I will. Great write up once again.

I have to admit a big man crush on Phil. I would be a bumbling fool in his company. Beyond legend status in my books and one of the very very few people I put on a pedestal.

  • hitch

Pardon my ignorance, in the set of three photos with the large one on the left showing everyone going up what looks like a decent road, it appears that most people are walking – why is that? If it’s a decent road wouldn’t it be better to ride?

  • Sean Doyle

    Steeeeeeep and muddy.

  • Hutchiko

From memory that looks like the steepest section of the 1st climb which comes in just after you come off the bitumen. Definitely ridable in the middle ring and it was not overly muddy but because of the big bunches early in the race it just takes one person up fount to decide it’s too hard or lose traction and whole bunch ends up walking.

The mud got so thick and sticky though the middle section that it actually stopped my front wheel from turning!

excellent write up, I was one of the 7 hour guys, love my mtbing and the OO is the highlight of my riding year, yes it has sweet Single Track and beautiful rain forest descents and climbs; but more importantly it’s a super mental challenge to keep going under extraordinary conditions, I rode with a small group of guys at times I waited for them and they waited for me, but overall we enjoyed a great experience together on what we really love doing. Challenge for you next year, try it on a Single Speed!

Just to give you the heads up, it was a tough day, my backyard aside. Having handed Cippo the points jersey in his first Giro I consider he copied much of his early style from as a senior 80′s peleton stylist. My first Odyssey was a disaster, DNF but like Wade I will now continue to attempt the course every year. I love it. The mountain bike scene up there in Forrest is the best. 1700 fit happy and healthy people hanging together is pretty cool.

Would prob leave him with an amazing abilty to ride consistently.

  • JonA

    Wade, great post.

I’ve done the Odyssey a couple of times with some mates and can attest to it’s brutality. The first time around, we made a pact to nurse a motley crew of 4 across the line together. A mate came off into the trees around half way and went into cramp land. We limped him along and just reached the top of the final climb when a chain snapped. We rolled across the line as they were packing up transition – 10 and a half hours after we set off.

    Character building

  • SupermanSam

Cheers pinarello413, it’s more of an affliction than a skill I can assure you. Cipo’s comments and actions are legendary, they still make me laugh when I see them (most recently on Big Ring with the one of him sitting up the front of the Giro peloton with oranges stuffed up his jersey pretending he’s got boobs..part Dumb & Dumber, part wacky Euro humour). The clip of him riding without the jersey is so ridiculous it’s awesome.

Am in awe of Phil posting here though. I can still remember Phil in his Motorola days and the race radio button embedded in his helmet, thinking man, that was way cool. Like the guy in the cartoons with a talking radio watch when I was a kid. I spent an afternoon trying to see if I could up my cr@ppy courier radio like that.

I still reckon Phil is the only one who’s been near the Badger when he’s riled up and not been punched out or pushed off the podium into 8ft of nothing . Remember the pic of Hinault dishing it out to the dock workers striking and blocking a Tour stage? The Badger is swinging punches and Phil’s stuck in the middle of it all. Phil can probably tell more, but he even revved Hinault up himself one day, offering Hinault a drink on a mountain stage, which Hinault the great one took as an insult from the whipper snapper young Aussie.

Forget that he’s probably Australia’s greatest ever cyclist, he ‘s quietly stashed the yellow and white jerseys away to pedal in the mud alongside us schmucks.
