U23 Road World Championships AND Hot Lap Competition!
I've had Matthews on my radar for a few years now. I first remember him a short 3 years ago in at the Tour of Bright. I was climbing up Mt. Hotham in the A grade groupetto and then a break away of B-graders came flying past us led by Matthews. B-Grade passing us big shot A-Graders? No way. I was only hanging on by the skin of my teeth and he made it look effortless. That year he won the B-grade event at 17yrs old along with the KOM. I hated him already...
Fast forward to the Herald Sun Tour at this time last year. I took notice of Michael Matthews again while watching him in Ballarat take a 5 lap solo flyer against the likes of team Garmin-Transitions doing everything they could to try to chase him down. He was finally brought back, but he made it look like he was toying with them. This kid was seriously impressive.
Last year when Drew Ginn was training for the National Time Trial championships I knew firsthand how strong Drew was. In training rides I’d find myself sitting on his wheel trying to come around and there was no chance in hell I could pull a turn. He’d set the powermeter 500 watts and sit there for 20mins at a time. Everyone who rode with him was blown away by strong he was. In the Oceania championships leading up the the Nationals Matthews (competing in the U23 category) beat Drew’s time by nearly 3 minutes. I couldn’t believe this was possible knowing how fast Drew was. As always there could have been other factors at play, but this was a good indication of Matthews’ potential.
This past season I’ve had my eye out for Matthews’ results and noticed him again at the Tour of Lankawi. He’s now winning the sprint finishes! He won stage 1 and stage 3 and was mixing it up with the pros. Over the past 6 months Matthews has been winning in Europe time and time again in much bigger races. Most recently le Tour de l’Avenir where he was third in the prologue and second on the first stage. Shortly after he signed with Rabobank for 2011 and 2010.
He’s a climber, a time trialist, a sprinter and he’s only 20 years old. Sounds like a perfect classics rider to me. Perhaps a Grand Tour rider in the future.
This afternoon when I saw the Aussies driving it up at the front in the final kilometers and Matthews sprinting to take the win it sent shivers down my spin. What a sensational ride! I’m incredibly happy for him and know he’ll have a great future ahead.
Does this change anyone’s mind about this possibly being a sprinters course?

BMC / Swiss Team HOT LAP Promotion
BMC has come through with the goods once again. As you might now, BMC is the official bike sponsor of the Swiss Cycling Federation. They’ve been helping out the Swiss team here at the World Champs all week with technical support. This works out well for us because as you all know BMC is a sponsor of Cycling Tips and has some great pull in the cycling world.
So here’s the deal. There are a limited 40 sets of ASSOS Swiss Federation jersey (limited edition) + Cap + socks (see more details here on ASSOS site). The set costs $200 AUD and the jersey is signed by 4 time World ITT Champion Fabian Cancellara. He just signed them today.
The Hot Lap “Twist”
From “on sale” until the Elite Men’s road race starts (10:00am Sunday 3 October), every purchaser will go into the draw for a “hot lap” in the Swiss team car during the Elite Men’s road race, after it enters the final Geelong circuit. Two people will be randomly drawn and notified by SMS immediately after the draw is made (make sure you put your phone number into your order details).
After 10:00am, we will continue to offer the sets (if there are any left) for sale until sold out for anyone who wants to look like a Swiss PRO.
As a runner up prize, I have two entries to give away for RIDE THE WORLDS on the morning of October 3. Instead of driving in a car around the circuit, you’ll be able to ride the same course the pros ride that morning (the first time this has ever been allowed). This was originally a prize for the WYMTM photo competition, but since it’s been delayed a week we need to get these out to someone quick!
Purchased jerseys will be available for collection from 09:00 Sunday 3rd at “The Bike Shop” exhibition – just look for the BMC’s, and bring your proof of purchase and ID for verification.
Note: If you are not in Geelong this weekend and still want to order the kit you’re more than welcome to do so. Postage will be free anywhere in Australia.
*****ORDER HERE ****** and you’ll have a 1 in 20 chance of getting a hot lap in the Swiss team car around the World Championships circuit!
