Richie Pretty In Pink

May 21, 2010

There are too many positive things happening at the moment with Australian cycling to give much attention to Floyd Landis’ allegations.   Misery loves company and it looks like Landis has hit rock bottom.   It’s a disaster for cycling and a sad situation for Floyd and all the people he’s accusing.

I prefer to focus on the positive right now.  Richie Porte in pink AND white, and in the past few minutes Mick Rogers took yellow at the Tour of California.  All this negativity should not overshadow these amazing achievements we’re witnessing right now.

Pink jersey, pink shades, pink helmet, pink decals, pink bartape and hoods.   I’m always amazed at how prepared these teams are at the Grand Tours.  Who would have guessed?

Cadel explaining what happened in yesterday’s stage. “You see, I was covering Vino here, a small bunch of 56 attacked and got a bit of a gap, nothing threatening….then all of a sudden…”

In case you missed it, Cadels Rainbow Jersey auction ended last night and sold for $6300! This is a fantastic contribution towards equipment for kids with Cerebral Palsy.  The rainbow shoes auction will start next week.

Vino tentatively practicing riding with no hands as he feels a victory salute coming on.

Just a few years ago Richie was surrounded by his Praties teammates at the Tour of Bright (I fondly remember how much it hurt).  Now look at him!  How cool would this be?

Let’s not forget about Lloydie still in the climbers jersey.

Another tattooed forearm stage winner.  Pozzato’s saves the pride of Italy and finally gets them a victory

Signs of elation is strictly forbidden amongst Italian cyclists on the podium.

Richie still in pink and white!

1. In the 1998 Giro, there was only one Aussie and he was also the only English-speaking rider in the tour. Who was he?  Hint: He works for Garmin-Transitions now.

2. The final stage of this year’s Giro is – ITT, criterium, normal road stage or TTT?

3. Has Mark Cavendish ever won a road stage (ie. not TTT) in the Giro?

Bonus: Who is the notable Aussie back in the Maglia Nera after today’s stage?  Which other Aussie teammate of his came in last in today’s stage?

Answers From Yesterday:

1. Robbie McEwen was the Aussie sprinter who won 3 stages of the Giro in 2005.

2. Matthew Goss and Richie Porte are both Tasmanians and both have won stages in the Baby Giro (and both have probably dated most of the same girls in Tasmania as well)

3. The significance of the color pink in the Maglia Rosa is that it’s the color of the pages of the original sponsor La Gazetta Dello Sport.   Too easy.

  • congrats Richie. You've put me on the bike every morning this week.
However, this post needs more comments. At least more than Landis gets ;)

this lloyd flandis taking away from the most important part of this post. re. q 2 yesterday, they have also ridden for SAXO.

    1. Matt White

    2. ITT

    3. yes. in 2008, and he gifted Griepel a stage...those were the days..., and 2009

    4. Jacky Bobby is last overall and his Australian teammate would be Cameron Meyer

I am very happy to see that Pozzato has claimed a victory.
I am sure the pressure was huge for him to succeed over the last few months. I have noticed he is looking very lean in the face, especially as this giro goes on and in my mind a sure sign he is as fit as can be.

I had to laugh at your remark CT re yesterdays answer to Q2, "(and both have probably dated most of the same girls in Tasmania as well)" I had to refrain myself from making similiar comments.

Glad to read and hear Richie Porte speak with maturity and level head on his position in the Giro.

It has been and is a most exciting Giro ( I am more into it than the ToC.) and it will get better this 2010 giro story. I really can't wait for the next 9 stages to arrive.

Also what was going on with Cadel during the last part of last nights stage, I read he was getting into a slap fest with another rider. Is this true?
  • From Cadel's daily diary (

"I was relying on Sky and Garmin to chase a bit more. Hence me getting frustrated with those who were purposely slowing down the chase, not the done thing in professional cycling. I let it be known to them, much to everyone's entertainment – sorry about that - not bad for a boring rider who never attacks, hey?"

... and not a BMC jersey in sight

    Floyd who?

In more interesting news, the Giro still has the best podium girls by far :)
  • Jack D
Er, except for the one in the first photo (on the right in white) - is that a cold sore on her top lip?...

Sheesh, hope she's not one of the podium girls kissing the riders as well? Maybe she is and that's the story.

More of the others though please.
  • Well, Sirotti shot some more Giro girls that I chose not to keep in the background. I'm sure they have lovely personalities...

Glad to see Richie's win at the Tour of Bright as finally been pointed out. Best training in Australia to lead on to wearing pink a few years later. ;-) Good to see these young guys going on to make it big in the world.

While Floyd might be a sad case, Lance didn't exactly smash his allegations out of the park...
  • Mark
Floyd is a drop kick. I think BikeSnob's posting today is the best post I've read on the matter.

That said, I think John Fahey's comments are pretty smack on.
  • JD1
Wow, that Saxo Bank team looks menacing at the front of Peleton. Richie must love having a team that strong to back him up, good luck!
  • I like the big green P behind Richie. He should be wearing one of them also as it is his first Grand Tour!

    Go @Porteye!! (pinkeye)

Matt White? Only because when you say "work" not ride..
    ITT, in Verona
    Yes, I think last year

Based on the last couple of days Bobridge would be the favourite for Black, he has been trading it with a Frenchman
I have been getting 2 out of 3 most days, so lest see which one I have wrong today!

FL is sad, everyone knows the stories and what did happen with LA, regardless of showing an official pos test, we all know how no one on Disco or Postal ever did a pos, but LOTS were done after they left, but stunts like this really do nothing for anyone

Oh yeah, and I am surprised Pozzato didn't strip down and show his back tattoo
